Gameforge needs to comply with the EU GDPR. EME couldn't give them our personal data without our permission.

I've personally sat through two corporate mergers and countless mind numbing meetings on proper procedures in handling user data in 2020 alone. GDPR doesn't make transfer of data illegal, it only enforces certain rules when it is transferred. This isn't even a case of selling data to a 3rd party, when a company is outright bought out the parent company becomes the legal owner of all their assets and data with far less restrictions in place.

Entire law firms sprang up specializing in compliance for M&A transactions after GDPR passed. We had to consult one the first time I went through an international merger after GDPR because our own legal dept in the US had zero experience handling it.

I suggest you educate yourself before further embarrassing and exposing yourself while desperately defending your corporate overlord.

EDIT: You know, I'm still more than a little ticked off at GF's scummyness but I'm probably just venting at some kid who's defending "daddy" so you know what, whatever, I've said my piece, I'm just venting here anyway. Peace out. On to better things.

That would have been illegal. EME could not legally give Gameforge anyone's account information without their permission. I'm sorry you lost your account, but GF and EME were not going to break the law for you.

Have you ever held a job at a company that isn't minimum wage?
Company mergers, buyouts, and closures are so common it's business as usual to transfer customer accounts. Half the screw ups at my last workplace was fixing crap after poorly managed mergers. Most buyouts happen SOLELY for customer accounts. Customer accounts are the single most valuable asset for the vast majority of businesses I can't believe I'm actually having to explain this to someone. I've even seen smaller companies crash and burn because a high level exec moved on to a competitor and took 80% of the customer accounts with him because he built a personal relationship with those customers.

You're gonna tell me GF couldn't afford to buy up the customer accounts or even the entirety of EME considering they were already a dead company? How much would that have cost? $5000 in lawyer fees to file all the paperwork?

Apparently that's too high a price to keep a decade worth of customer accounts and a couple GB of storage. Keep on defending and supporting scummy companies though, they will no doubt reward you generously in the end for your loyalty.

What killed it for me is that they decided to delete my account because I missed their bullshit 6 week transfer window. I've played since launch 2011, probably put well over $1000 into the game over a decade of playing. Dozens of characters, costumes, mounts, multiple accounts, millions in items. I took long breaks, but I always came back every once in a while to catch up. This is a common occurrence in MMOs, people play hard, they take a break to play other games, deal with life, etc, and they come back when they have free time. What did I come back to this time? A dead site, and a lost account.

Know what other MMO also had a publisher change recently? BDO.
And the time they gave players to do a transfer? Six MONTHS.

And most importantly? They actually sent a notification to people they were going to do this.

I've heard of GF being scummy for years while playing NA Tera from EU players who intentionally moved to NA Tera, but this truly takes the cake.

It was 100% within GF's capacity to just migrate over everyone's accounts and allow people to transfer them as they come back. EME was shutting down, even their website could've been transferred over to GF ownership.

What was the business meeting like to decide to give decade long players 6 weeks to transfer or lose everything? "Well if they lose thousands of dollars of stuff, they'll have to rebuy it all!"

    Yeah, fat chance.

GF can go f*ck themselves and I'll make sure to pass on my story to anyone I meet even considering playing a GF run game.
