Most people (including me) didn't have to go over the hops and hurdles of unnecessary clicking before and it took me some time to figure it out. 
That icon not only was there to warn me about the pet's hunger but whenever in party or in crowded areas with dozen dragonettes around I could quickly check whether my one was out or not. Now, sometimes it actually is hard to tell whether I'm looting things or not.
