Crash to desktop trying to log on- maybe too many characters?

  • So I migrated my account over okay; figured that was the last of it and all I had to do was log on and start playing to see what else was going on.

So I fire up my GF launcher, update, and hit play. Make it to the game selection screen, hit the tag for Tera, and figure I'm going to be checking out new stuff-

Oh. Crash to desktop trying to access my characters on Velik. Wonderful. Let's try that again-

And another crash to desktop. So I update everything under the sun and give it another go... and it keeps crashing to desktop on me for some reason.

So I close everything else- and just run Tera- nope, still crashes trying to access Velik and Kaia servers (tried them both).

I've been tinkering with my stuff for the last four hours trying to get it to work, and no go. Starting to think this might be serverside instead of clientside.

I deleted my GF Tera and the app and tried to download through Steam, and couldn't get my account linked to the Steam account- but I was able to get to the character selection on the Steam install. I mean, maybe I have too many characters or something? It says I have 10- is there any way to delete a character without having to go into the game? Maybe that's why it's crashing...

If that's not it, I'll just have to wait for the next patch, I guess.

EDIT: Tried to log onto Tera Battle Arena, got as far as creating a nickname and then briefly to character select; then it crashed to desktop too. I think something's up with the NA servers still.

  • I'm not sure if this is related, but since the last patch Tera seems to be using A LOT more system resources. My PC is better than the recommended system requirements, but by the time I get to character selection Tera is already using 5.5GB of RAM and over 50% of my CPU. It gets worse after I actually get into the game - up to 94% CPU use if I'm in a crowded area.

If your computer is closer to the minimum requirements, maybe that's the cause?

  • I'm packing 16 GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have an i5-7600 CPU and a GTX 1070 graphics card with latest drivers, so I don't think it's on my end. I seem to get further along on a Steam install of Tera than I do on the GF client version (I was able to reach the character-select screen on the Steam version where this version just crashes going to the character select screen).

Just tried it again- ran repair, closed everything else. Tried to log on, got to selecting between Tera and Tera Battle Arena. Chose Tera, went into the loading tunnel, and CTD again. I might make an EU Tera account if I'm allowed to test if it's the NA servers or just the install in general.

  • Okay, this is starting to get really, really ridiculous. Tried it again today, still the same CTD. Re-installed my Gameforge client, still crashing to desktop. Going to go ahead and try to re-install, but at this point, you might as well offer the chance to log into GameForge via the Steam version so we can use that instead of this.

I'm just frustrated and want to play Tera, but this is pretty much the choice you guys have me at:

    1) Delete Tera and the GF app, and redownload on Steam with a completely fresh and brand-new account that has none of the characters/costumes/whatevers I've collected over the years. I'd have to rebuy and re-roll for everything, but I'd be able to play Tera.

    2) Keep screaming into the wind here and on the support network and hope to anything people are actually working on it because this is a bunch of crap. I went through the suggestions, tried them all, my computer specs exceed the needed to play, and all my other MMOs run perfectly fine on this computer, but I still constantly CTD and oh boy howdy is it frustrating to not be able to know what the problem is.

    3) Hope to anything there's a way to link a GF account to a Steam install. Even just a logon option to link accounts there (that's not migration) would be amazing.

I still believe you guys are working on it, but this is kind of ridiculous at this point. I'm usually of the opinion that just giving developers time to fix their games is all it takes, but it's been a few days now and just... urgh.

  • I am having the same issues as well. I run 16 GB of RAM, intel 4930K, and a Nvidia 970. I have 2 SSD's with one running Win7 and the other Win10. Game crashes with both OS's at the TP load screen. Never had an issue with crashes with either the EME or GF client before the NA takeover.

I have sent the Log data to GF support team. Have not heard anything back yet.

  • I'm filing a message with Support to see if they can link my Steam account and my GF account. I re-downloaded Tera on Steam and lo and behold, it works perfectly, so I guess there's something screwy with the GF client or the version of Tera it downloads.

Is there any way I can link them myself and not have to wait? Or am I pretty much out of luck until I hear back from them? I tried to look for where it said to log in, but the only options I had when I first fired it up were "migrate account" and "create new account" with no option to log in an existing GF account.

  • Tried it, and it took my login info and says it's linked... and yet when I still go on my Velik server... nothing. No characters present.

Does it usually take time for this kind of thing to filter on down? Because like I said, this is really, really getting old. Do I have to re-install again? Because this is what it feels like: oh, hey, you can play the game or have your account, one or the other.

  • Went ahead and checked all my mail accounts, nothing. Re-installed Tera, still nothing. At this point, I feel I just have to wait for support to churn through the huge piles of backlog they have and hopefully they fix my account Soon (tm). At this point, if I don't hear anything from them tomorrow, I figure I won't hear anything until after the start of December.

At least with EnMasse, you could actually still play the blasted game without hoping you didn't screw up some arcane option somewhere. Yeah, it was a pain to add currency to it, but it was playable...

I don't mean to get ragey, but I'm frustrated and it just doesn't feel like staff is listening, because if they were it would have been handled by now, I imagine.

  • Yeah, I kind of figured I wasn't going to hear until after the holidays, anyways. *sigh*

What a way to run a railroad. The ticket queues must be miles long if they haven't gotten to me yet. Or they're just ignoring us like EnMasse did.

  • Yeah, they certainly did:

They closed the ticket and told me I was pretty much crap out of luck on recovering the migrated account, why not try the list of things I actually already did try before I went to ask support to actually provide support?

I already miss EnMasse. I mean, I had six years invested on those characters, a few of them were top levels, and a load of costumes and everything. And now I have to start aaaaaaaall over because apparently it's too hard to hit a few buttons and switch something around.

Rest in peace, old characters, all that time and effort, and all those collected costumes. I guess I'll just have to hope I can re-score everything all over again...

  • It seems odd that there's no way to save characters and transfer characters.

Many of us spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on Tera... just to find out now that all that effort and dollars spent is lost because GF is too lazy to make the proper conversions.
