Hello all, I know Im super late to the party. But I have only found out about the existence of TERA recently. The combat looked very captivating, something I know that TERA is known for. However, I am also aware of how TERA is not in the best place right now. I guess my question is, is this game worth it in 2020? Is it pay2win?
In addition, I reside in the SEA region, so I was wondering if I should try Shen server (I heard it's dead), or Minstrel, which I hear is more populated (but still kinda dead). Is there like a Korean server as well, if so are they doing well?
Any comments are greatly appreciated.
What server to play in? Is it worth playing TERA in 2020?

Just came back from a 3 years stop and i think it's always worth playing a bit as long as you don't get hooked into the "Shop to advance faster" loop.
The grind is still here but can't say it's that bad.
Of course if you're looking for PvP the situation is different <.< -
If Shen is dead (I have no idea), I remember people from the SEA region used to play TERA in 2013 and pwn with their skill, even if their ping was high.
They did all high level dungeons, so that makes me believe that the ping wasn't that hard of a barrier.

Im not trying to sound pessimistic, but after visiting several threads from the past few years/ months, the consensus I got was that it's just going downhill and is the worst it has ever been. But I wanted to hear what's happening more recently with GameForge as the new publisher, since many said they were miles better than En Masse.

ah okay, cause I couldn't find threads talking about Shen server at all, only the announcement of its launch, and one thread on what to improve on. It just seemed like it was dead but Im not entirely sure. So I figured I'd ask it here to see if anyone knows more about it after scouring for info about it on Google, but to no avail.

Thanks for the reply. I saw that, which is also part of the reason I made this post because it's been a month or two after the shutdown of EME and wanted to see if anything good actually happened under GameForge.

I watched a Shen-Streamer a couple of days ago. It was empty and the streamer also told me that it was a dead server.

Used to play when RMHM/HH was considered engame and i assure you that Mystel is way better now than what was at that time in terms of activity.
-
is this game worth it in 2020?
There is no other game like it up to 2020, however if it's worth it or not, is just up to you.
There are other MMOs out there that could be considered better in some aspects, but overall there's not just a king since each of them misses something, either the grind is insane, they lack certain aspects or the combat is not nearly as enjoyable.
I'd advice trying and then deciding.
Is it pay2win?
Yes it is, though it's not strictly pay2win.
The p2w factor comes from the rhythm of updates that deems the content of few use by the time you have access to it if you don't cash in and the events.
There are ways to get most stuff ingame without paying, the game is enjoyable on a casual level though it may be harsh on beginners. On an endgame level if you don't adhere to a certain set of contents and play the broker you'll be probably left behind unless you nolife it.
should try Shen server (I heard it's dead), or Minstrel
For ping purposes you should try Shen. However in the past month I saw some Shen players going to Mystel for activity purposes, the PvP situation there in particular seems to be pretty bad outside of Sundays.
Korean server
Can't give much intel on the Korean server but in theory that one would require an ID to play it.

All others server are so dead it's better off playing on Mystel right now even with high ping. Ironic since you find a lot of players from US/Asia on Mystel.
Yeah it's not p2w if you got the time to grind your ass off and don't have a life basically, I would rather work at McDonald's and use the money to p2w myself to glory instead of doing same boring shit all over again that requires shit tons more time and effort than that. Been there, done that, geared 3 characters to full +15 only could do it because it was lockdown. With the insane inflation or what the fack happened due to cheating?? it's even better to p2w right now. When I took 2 months break and saw how fucked the economy became. holy shit I uninstalled the game immediately.

Note I wasn't talking about the Shen server (it didn't exist in 2013), but that people from the SEA region were playing TERA quite well in Gameforge's European servers back then....

Pay2SkipContent is the right definition.
If you're used to a little grind you can manage a +12 set and i'm pretty sure it would be anough for 95% of the content, am i right.. ?
Yeah TC is kinda of a must but you can buy it at broker if you're willing to grind a bit more.
So far it seems like the game hasn't changed ( pve wise ) from what it was years ago and nobody will force you to +15 three chars in 2-3 months <.<Edit: Feels like event are way better now compared to a couple years ago. No shit forcing you to cash shop and decent rewards to ease the grind on unreasonably hard stuff ( like companions ).

Hop on in if you like pyramids.
What pyramids you ask? RNG ones as pretty much everything progression related is randomized in a way to make you open your wallet.
Good luck getting anywhere near endgame without that.

Came back something more than a week ago, i'm already full annihilation +10 ( mostly thanks to the "WelcomeBack" gift that gives you 2 scrolls to +10 each piece ) but i have already enough stuff that i could +10 another char.
I know, +10 is just the minimun requirement but i'm pretty sure that getting full +12 is not gonna take much longer than another 10-15 days.
I feel like TC is really useful especially if you don't wanna run multiple characters so i bought it but i already have enough golds that i could buy it at broker for the next month.
Yeah the game requires some dedication, it's not meant for casuals but that's not new, even during Vm2 the grind was already here.
At the same time you can't say that you need +15 and best rolls on everything to be able to access content.
Worst part about this game is the community. So much elitism... :\
Edit: Before somebody asks, i play 3-5 hours day but nobody prohibits you to progress slower by playing less...
Edit2: Seems like there are a lot of events these days that help with progression. We had nothing like this kind of rewards years ago. -
You say elitism, I say being a dead weight creates bad experience for rest of the party.
The truth is, no one wants a tank that can't hold aggro, healer that can't heal or dd that does no damage.
In other words, if you can't do your job properly don't expect people to be happy about it, as in endgame content you are expected to perform at least decently.
If you can't and refuse to improve don't waste other peoples time and stick to low tier dungeons.
Otherwise spend time at crab gradually increasing your dps and listen to what others say to you even if they just trashtalk you, then think what you can do to improve.
I never cried about elitism even when people just told me to kms when i was starting out, as I acknowledged the fact that I was the problem, and worked hard to become better.
You can of course ignore what i just said, keep on being a dead weight, cry about elitism and have attitude of being entitled to being spoonfed loot and having fun at others expense but the playerbase is so small now that eventually your name will be remembered and you'll get kicked even from im's.
I'll probably get warned for spitting facts now but idc.

Yeah your answer does nothing other than convincing me that the community of this game is toxic as much as the developers.
As i said i'm a relatively new player because even if i know how my class works ( played for years in the past ) i'm not used to new dungeons. The training mode at Highwatch only offers SOME of the instances to test and ofc the higher ones aren't included ( except Bahaar ) so even if i read the usual guide and watch tons of videos the moment i'll enter the dungeon i'm not gonna perform as an experienced player. If you want to run your daily instances in 30 seconds avoding inexperienced players i hope you don't queue IM and kick returning players just because they're not as experienced as you are otherwise don't cry here on this forum that the game is dead.
Anyway at the end i personally don't care about elitism, it's easy to just avoid toxic people and i'm fine but the best way to keep new players away is to treat them like if they're trash. -

Yes, this is the case. There are nice people willing to help others too though. If you queue instance matching just be prepared for anything.
Another idea to improve is gathering some people and going for a few LFG training runs to learn a dungeon, this usually helps.
-
All servers are dead if you ask me. This might change with the transfer of Tera NA's population though.
-
I did help rookies learn dungeons, often spending hours wiping in bahaar until they learned and i'm still doing it from time to time. Also I don't trashtalk guys with green fairy in im's, unless they consistently do some really dumb shit or I'm witnessing handbook examples of Dunning-Kruger, that makes me go medieval.
But if you think i'm toxic then prepare to board a pain train, as some people go in im's just to shit on others, out of pure spite.
Welcome to TERA, it is what it is.

NA population won't join EU servers, why would you believe that ?
