FPS drop after a while GTX 1080

  • Hello,

Yes another thread about it sorry.

I have 2 computers and on one of them there are no fps drop compared to the other one

    laptop : msi gs-40 (6qe)

    i7-6700HQ @2.6Ghz

    16GB RAM

    GTX 970
    Windows 8.1 latest updates

    PC :

    i7-6700 @4.4Ghz

    32GB RAM

    GTX 1080

    Windows 10 latest updates

    The issue :

After let's say traveling between 3 or 4 towns something like 5mins of gameplay, my PC has a significant fps drop from ~144fps to ~30-40fps even if there are no players around nor enemies even in a little instanced dungeon. And it stays - still - at that low framerate despite its higher specs.

The laptop runs just fine at 60fps. uh.

Playing on the PC in 1080p or 4K, whatever the resolution I pick it doesn't change anything
MSI Afterburner stats are as follow :

    - GPU usage is around 25%, temps can reach 50°C to 70°C but not going above (it's super hot in my country atm)

    - CPU usage is around 25%, temps are 50°C

    No overclocking.

I've tried with the latest nvidia drivers, and also tried an old one (399.42) but to no avail.

I followed the good old topics about how to optimize the game options, geforce experience , and .ini files, but this isn't bringing any better results. And tbh these explanations are useless when I can just compare 2 computers at the same time with the same configurations.

In the end I can't understand why it runs better on my laptop.

If you have an idea about what's going on because I didn't have these fps drops a year ago on the PC. I'm cleaning my computer lol, and I'm also often formatting the disk to have a clean install. So it's become a mystery to understand what is provoking the FPS drop at this point.

Is it DirectX 12? Is it the UE3 that is having issues with a gtx1080? Is it a Windows 10 issue, and the game runs better on Windows 8.1? Have you guys had the same issues and could you find a solution?

    Thanks for any help ~

  • Just gonna say its the Engine itself thats so old that we get random FPS drops even on High end RIGs.

Heck im running 2080ti's and getting 30FPS sometimes on Highwatch.

I do hope so the 64bit Fix that will be coming soon will help though.

  • Yeah this is really needed, even after so many years, new hardware just cannot run TERA to deliver a good gaming experience... Hope they can release the fix soon.

  • Having installed Windows 8.1 on the PC (dual boot)

I didn't have any issue. Switching back to Windows 10, the FPS drop and texture issues were persistent.

Now that I have upgraded for the 64bits version,

the problem is still the same on Windows 10!

After few minutes of traveling, the game just refuses to go past 45 FPS.

Do you have any real fix for this?

  • hey same here on windows 8.1

It's initially 144fps on windows 10 but after traveling with pegasus it stays at 45fps all the time.

    I can't understand what's going on seriously...

  • I see, not a bad choice tbh, 1440p is perfect for gaming anyways. I'm sticking with 1080p but sometimes when games are not so graphically demanding like TERA I can 4K DSR which results on my display a pixel perfect anti aliased image.

    Anyways, thanks for your replies.

I'll update the topic if I have any issues with newer builds of Windows 10.
