New player questions

  • Hi, I want to start in this game with the right choices, so help is appreciated.

Class: Which class is currently meta and easier to gear up? (I like ranged DPS with high survive-abilities and mobility)

Server: Which server is populated and kinda new and easier to catch up in the long run? EN server (My time is around UTC+2)

If you have any other tips or videos please post them, gladly appreciate the help <3

  • Im new (2 months) but you are asking some silly questions...

If it is the first time you play TERA, just pick the class you just want until you get comfortable with the game, then if you dont like that class, delete the character and start over. As simply as that.

With the exception of the slayer that people say it is borked (i didnt try it yet) any other class should be fine. If you want ranged dps, the sorcerer is probably the best class followed by the archer, and then priest i guess. The mystic is also a ranged class but it is more focused on group healing abilities, so it is not about dps.
If you want a mix, i would say that the priest is what you want. Strong attacks (but not too diversified) and healing capabilities. But i think the sorcerer is what you want.

But dont expect great mobility on those classes, because you know, the game is balanced, you cant have everything. They sacrifice "mobility" for more ranged abilities and such.

I dont know what do you mean with "meta". There is no such a thing in this game. Keep in mind, the combat style is unique in this game, and every class is meta on its own.

Catch up? i dont know exactcly what you mean. You start and you level up to 65, then you keep doing dungeons, guardian missions, etc, etc, to keep grinding for whatever you want. I dont know exactly what do you mean. You dont "catch up" in mmorpgs lol.

The whole game is not very populated but i guess with the exception of Bahar, every other should be more populated.

  • Priest is healer and nothing to do with dealing dmg, Mystic is the same and there is no problem with slayer.
Just pick the class what you like, dont need to follow the "meta".

Ranged classes are archer, gunner and sorc. After awakening2 sorc will be realy weak compare to archer and gunner.. and imo atm the weakest ranged class too.

Mystel(pve) or Killian(pvp). Dont go for any other servers like Bahaar since they are empty.

  • Of course it boils down to what you prefer in practice and no one can tell unless you tried, but it's not wrong to ask for tips to get a directions here.

If you're new and want to play a ranged dps class with survivabilty, then gunner is the best class for you. It has great mobility and some self-heal abilities, unlike sorcerer and archer, and only a few amount of spells which should make it easier for you to learn the class. I think sorcerer, while having many movement skills, is the least mobile class, since it a lot of it skills require being charged up, so if you like fast paced gameplay, you should try one of the other two classes.

All three classes are pretty much equal in terms of damage capability, it all comes down to how well you can play the class but i recommend you trying all classes out for yourself to see what suits you the best.

Also, priest is more of a support than a damage class, so I would not recommend it if you want to lay focus on DPS. Same goes for mystic.

The common meta consists of classes that have awakening right now, as you can see in 3rd party statistics for which classes are commonly present in clearing dungeons. This excludes all 3 of the ranged dps classes I mentioned but that should be of no big concern though because awakening for all classes will be unlocked soon.

You can start on any server; the newer ones (Dagon and Bahaar) are less populated than the others and it's easier to catch up on those if you know how.

Priest is healer, sure but it has strong attack spells, not only healing, like the tornado, nemesis, for example, and strong close melee attacks as well, that is dps dude. I literally break havoc with my priest. For the other hand, mystic , 75% of skills are for party healing. And i said about the slayer because about a year ago, after reading many posts it was broken in some way. I suposse they fixed it?

Priest is a ranged class too. Because the main attack is range based, as simply as that. And while some abilities are melee range, most of em are ranged based.

And yeah! i forgot about the gunner. Definitely if he wants ranged dps, thats the choice.. lol.

    Ok dude.

  • Welcome to Tera Salamander Ava!

From my expirience with the range classes in tera, i could tell that all of them got its unique survive-abilities and mobility.
If i were you i would try them all (sorcerer, archer and gunner for range dps) and see later which one you would like to gear up.
    Good luck and have fun!

  • Don't worry about the right choices early on. Leveling a new character is rather fast and getting to Frostmetal gear doesn't take long either.

Currently Meta would be Berserker and Warrior. But in 2 Months things will change, but we can't actually be "totally certain" how.
Ranged DPS with high mobility and survive abilities is definitely Sorc. But looking at up coming k-tera patches Sorc will be one of the weaker classes and probably not Meta.
So ... go Archer. It's actually rather beginner friendly, while still having very good damage potential, and it supposed to still be good in 2 months.
Gunner is ranged DPS but has ... challenging mobility. It's not really slow, but not a class i would recommend for a new comer.

Regarding servers. Do not go to the new servers. Unless you want that "complete newb in a big unknown world" experience i guess.
You see this poster from Bahaar. He said some really strange things, which simply aren't true like "every class is meta in its own way" ... yeah w/e ... Berserker and Warrior are just a lot more meta in their own way than the rest apparently.
Bahaar is one of the new servers. Whenever we get people from Bahaar or the other new servers via IM you can be almost certain that they will have a lot less experience and general game knowledge. Apparently there aren't many long time players to show the new comers the ropes on the new servers, ... who would have thought that. xD
But honestly. I can understand the appeal of wanting to find out yourself, relive that first MMO experience, but ...
Population on the new servers is so low that its hard to find a group. Go to the populated old servers if you want a decent chance at finding groups.
(Hasm... i mean Yurian, Killian, Mystel, Seren)

  • getting to Frostmetal gear doesn't take long

    It does...

there aren't many long time players to show the new comers the ropes on the new servers

Neither are on old servers, as no one ever speaks. The only interaction that happens is random guild invites coming out of the blue.

  • Hi, ignore all the previous wall text that tl,dr; "Play for your fun", rude but if you aren't on meta, you won't find any group

Class: If you really want to play a ranged class, pick in order:
Archer, easiest rotation, good mobility, solid dps
Gunner, either you're really good at gunner or you will struggle, rotation rng based, tricky mobility, self heal, high defense, decent dps
    Sorcerer, no.

Server: Killian or Mystel, ancient myths speak of distinction between PvP and PvE in those 2 servers, but it doesn't even matter

If I had to start over again, with all the current knowledge, that's what I would do:
Warrior, Guardian missions 40 daily, BAMs until stormcry+9, sell my soul in lfg to find skilled people that trusts new players to run AAHM.

Berserker is better than warrior, but you would have to use macro and risk a ban, and warrior is more agile and interactive to play

  • Hi, ignore all the previous wall text that tl,dr; "Play for your fun", rude but if you aren't on meta, you won't find any group

Then explain smth to me. How the hell i saw ninjas, sorcs, valks, etc. in full heroic gear if they cant find a group?
if you cant find a group its only the user problem cuz prolly he/she cant play the class properly.

use the meta classes ? zerker is boring class for me, so why i should play that class if it not fun at all for me?

  • if you cant find a group its only the user problem cuz prolly he/she cant play the class properly.

Which is ultimately YOUR fault for not teaching them how to play it.

  • Which is ultimately YOUR fault for not teaching them how to play it.

I hope you feel that pretty dumb reason... but guess that the easier way... blame others for your own problem.
Everyone get enough time to learn their classes till they need to do "harder" dungs.
My experience is that, most of them dont even want to read/watch a guide about the dungs and just join totally clueless.

  • Which is ultimately YOUR fault for not teaching them how to play it.

Although I see where you come from, keep in mind: don't take experienced people helping others as granted. They either help or not. They're not entitled for your attention.

It's personal "preference" if I can say that. Some experienced players do help willingly and some won't even if they were asked something simple.

  • ... Some experienced players do help willingly and some won't even if they were asked something simple.

... and some will give you wrong answers.
I can only guess as to if that is done with a purpose or not, or what that purpose might be. So instead i'll just leave it at that.

Which is ultimately YOUR fault for not teaching them how to play it.

This does remind me of something...

One thing i forgot to mention was:
Especially Killian, but to some extent Mystel too, have a reputation for having a toxic community.
I'm not going to defend those toxic players that have no sense of tact or compassion, but not all people that reject a newbie who wants to go Hard Mode do this because they hate on new players.

Tera endgame is not easy mode. Most of the people i know had to practice many hours of wipes in AAHM before being able to clear once, and i am not talking about consistently. In the first weeks after the patch you could count the number of parties that had cleared it simply by looking at the ranking board... it wasn't full, at least on my server (Killian and Mystel do have more players ... so who knows what it was like there). With that in mind...

Personally when I reject someone for my AAHM party on Sunday at 5pm, it's not because I am not willing to give them a chance. Its because I have raid at 8pm and want to eat something before and not waste 3 hours in AAHM and not even clear the boss once.
There is a time and place for try runs, it's not all the time. Nobody is 'entitled' to the time and commitment of anyone else. Some may give that willingly. Some may not. But acting as if its your right to claim that time and commitment will in fact *not* make it more likely to receive it.
It is still true that if you never get a chance you can never learn, but in my experience...

Be nice to people, and they will be nice in return.

  • ... and some will give you wrong answers.
I can only guess as to if that is done with a purpose or not, or what that purpose might be.

You're right, most of the time they do it for their own amusement to look cool / act funny on global chat. They fall into the "they don't want to help" category.

  • Hello, and welcome to tera first of all ^^ . I would suggest that you pick a class you feel most comfortable with, a class you like.. Picking the strongest meta to main wont be worth it in my opinion if you dont like the class.. I mean games are supposed to be fun arent they? :D
Now, to answer your question. Please bear in mind that every players individual skill plays a very important role on how strong your class will be, how "well" you use the meta to your advantage. Whatever class you pick, spend the time to learn it, otherwise no matter how strong it currently is, you will not perform well enough.
Metas change, but currently, fromwhat I have seen, and sites that show stats per dungeon,
when it comes to dps, top tier options are valkyrie (melee dps), warrior (melee but harder to master) and slaying berzerker.
As a tank myself, what I can tell you is this:
-Brawler: very good dps and very well survivability but non-existent party buffs.
-Lancer: low dps, very well survivability and very string and useful party buffs. These party buffs are what makes some top tier parties prefer a lancer on their party rather than a brawler. However both options are viable as tanks and it all comes down to what playstyle you prefer, aggressivw or supportive.
-Berzerker tank and warrior tank, dont even think about it if you ask me :whistling:
As to healers i have absolutely no experience, but both are useful so it doesnt matter much
    Best regards,
    AL

  • I already did. I have a priest lvl 65 already. Everything i said is correct. But if you want to enlight me, you are welcome lol.

yes, you can do a small amount of dmg as priest and more as mystic, BUT it was asked about the classes and game in general,
so if you tell a new person, that priest and mystic are ranged dps, it's simply not true, if they get into a dungeon later on and decide they're dps, they'll be kicked in no time
simply because priest and mystic have healer roles, while mystic is more on the healing + support site, (and it does more dmg through the thralls that you gotta summon)
is priest the: oh shit, healer, that's quite newbie party friendly

you can do a small amount of dmg, yes
calling them a ranged dps class, no
they're support and healing, and do a bit of dmg while doing so
most of the dmg skills are so you can play solo at the start, and also do your IoD bams and guardian missions
pure (ranged) dps classes will always deal more dmg, than the priest and mystics (hopefully)
