It is possible in general. There are some cases when we don't change names though. As I don't know what happened here (I was not involved) I can only ask your friend to contact and explain me what happened and I'll have a look.

So did a friend of mine last week and he got a positive answer. Maybe there are some hidden considerations about it such as the new name shouldn't be too different from the old one, so people can still identify you, or it shouldn't be too similar to another active user's name.

It's a discussion after all - there's no practical need for the thread to get closed whatsoever. Maybe someone else will have a good reason to have their name changed or want to post about their experience here (to say thank you for example) instead of opening a new thread, making it harder for other users to find information later because there are 10 junk threads about the same topic. Your thread "should've been closed" after my first reply because it answered your question. If it indeed got closed right away (for no good reason!!!!!!!!), then SisterofVi would've been unable to post his comment about his boyfriend. Consequently, Vayus wouldn't have heard about the problem and offered to resolve it etc.
Tl;dr: There's no need to have a healthy thread closed just because your question got answered.
