• If this is your first character (I assume it is) , you may want to experience all the outer world Tera has to offer.
There are some really wonderful places around, and you'll get to see many kinds of environments and monsters.
That being said, if you're still reading this and you want to give this a try, then follow yellow quests and explore everything (plus you'll also get achievements for exploring all towns and from many of the yellow quests , so better get them now than having to go back once you're cap lvl ).

I did this with my first character, and it made me really appreciate all the outer world (while as of today most new players just get to lvl 65 in 3-4 days at most following the daily+dungeon strategy ) , plus it gave me more of a leveling-through-lore kind of feeling , since I've also appreciated all the story (just doing dungeons won't give you much of an idea about it , and it's really a waste since it's quite a good story-line).

lvl 65 game is all about grinding and tends to get quite boring , since you simply spam BAMs for vanguards and dungeons everyday ..so I don't really suggest grinding your way up to lvl 65..take your time (it will still be fast when compared to other MMOs..you should explore all the world and get all normal and lore-related quests quite easily within a couple weeks at most) and enjoy the game  Have fun .

  • then follow yellow quests and explore everything

No. No. And NO. Do NOT do yellow quests from the Open World (you might want to just take instance yellow quests as they will give you bonus gold/items/exp). If you do yellow quests you will very quickly over level instances and won't be able to use IM for them. And then you will either need to clear them solo, or just skip them and clear later when you will be "stronger".

(plus you'll also get achievements for exploring all towns and from many of the yellow quests , so better get them now than having to go back once you're cap lvl ).

And you will waste way more time on doing those "achievements" while being 'on level', then having to go back and clearing everything while being 65 lvl (example: kill 10 bams, on 65 you gather as much as possible and nuke all with one skill, while on level doubt you can quickly kill more then 3). Great suggestion...

Who plays an MMO game for lore or story? 99% of MMOs have your generic "be the hero, save ze world from bad guys/demons/robots/aliens" crap. TERA lore went to trash bin with WH update and every next update has even less logic then the previous one. I doubt people even read the quest logs...

So in a conclusion for OP: the less time you waste on reaching max level (since TERA starts at "endgame"), the better for you as 1-64 provides nothing of value. Do not believe in "but you learn your class" or similar crap (the only thing that could somehow make you a better <insert class> player would be to equip not avatar weapon and go to solo BAMs of different types while being on similar level to them to get to know attack patterns of those BAMs as 20 lvl basilisk is the same mechanic wise as 65 lvl one). The only thing you might wanna consider while storming through leveling is to gather materials (50 of each Energy, Ore and Plant, just the regular version, "Fine" can be skipped) so that when you reach 58 lvl you will have enough of them to complete "Bolstering the Home Front" quest (details here ) for 1 more inventory slot.

He said everything good. He stated his opinion on how you should level your first char and just because you disagree with him there is no need to quote him like he said something wrong which he did not. TERA lore requires you to do just 1 time dungeon if you follow story and you can almost always complete all quests included in that dungeon with just that one run.

There is something to what you said. I leveled my first char by doing all quests because i had 0 clue how to level but i miss those times because i was so enthusiastic back then. Unfortunetly tera is a game that can become boring very soon so i would recommend you to slowly try the game and learn if you are just a casual player.

    True!

Your suggestion is grindy one without one bit of fun. Yes i can also quote and make statements too

I can confirm this aswell. You don't really learn the class before lvl 65 because you reacive main skills once you hit lvl 60+

If you are here to play daily over 3-5hours then follow nagios suggestion but if you are casual player that would like to discover the map and enjoy its wonders a bit listen to zaras.:beer:

  • nagios i don't know why you even bothered to comment...

Because I know how leveling process changed in the past 3 years and I've experienced each change BHS applied to it and suggesting to waste time on activities that won't really benefit new players is just not good?

Unfortunetly tera is a game that can become boring very soon so i would recommend you to slowly try the game and learn if you are just a casual player.

This is pretty much how I also started. I knew shit about the game, was too lazy to google (aka wanted to "learn on my own" as previous MMO encounters where I had a friend who was rushing/power leveling me was no fun and even tiring) and my first char in 2013 took nearly 3 months to reach 60 lvl. As I was doing yellow quests (*cough* soloing bams *cough*), I didn't have avatar weapons, I didn't get "correct" crystals for free (thing I saw with VM8 update was that 58+ BAMs drop hardy/pounding/bitter cruxes now, but since I didn't kill enough I can't say if BHS disabled "bad" crystals from dropping, but if yes, then it's even more easy), I didn't get vanguard quests exp, game didn't had any "low level" BG (CS got added week before I've reached 60, I think I did it one time before level cap) for ridiculous amount of free exp, most quests didn't give you gear/alkahest/feedstock, you didn't have the option to freely enchant every item to +9 so that you could facetank all hits with +9 gear, all those "experience boosts" on story quests. And probably other stuff I've forgotten that made leveling a boring and annoying chore.

just because you disagree with him there is no need to quote him like he said something wrong which he did not.

Where did I quote he said wrong about "experience all the outer world Tera has to offer." (part which you quoted)? I didn't say he is wrong nor I said OP should skip any exploring or skip lore (I pointed out MMOs aren't played for the lore as it's almost as generic as it can be). Not doing yellow quests =/= not exploring/not reading lore (this is almost same assumption as people who can't distinguish "getting gear" and "upgrading gear" terms). Sure some areas are "yellow quests only" (first from my memory - Pirate Grotto) but you still explore pretty much 80% of areas if you just focus on red quests.

I stated (which is a fact) that doing yellow quests (all of them), even without exp buff scrolls (which are/were a reward on most red quests, last char I've leveled was during 'Starfail' event and those scrolls were still there) will make OP outlevel IM requirements for instances (I'm not 100% sure, but even just focusing on red quests might also outlevel CR/NT/GL/AH) and with this he will be left to either skip them (and skip finishing certain story quests) if he won't be able to solo them (which I assume he won't) or he will need to ask on LFG for people who thought (or got told) similar stuff regarding "yellow quests".

TERA lore requires you to do just 1 time dungeon if you follow story and you can almost always complete all quests included in that dungeon with just that one run.

And I've said exact same stuff:

"(you might want to just take instance yellow quests as they will give you bonus gold/items/exp)" + ofc completing Red/Story quest in said instance, but I've assumed that it is obvious.

Point of notice that is irrelevant to this topic - certain quests in instances can't be completed just with one run. The ones I remember the most are LoT and ET ones (my mystic still has those in her quest log as I can't be bothered to run LoT/ET 10-20 times as some "Kill mobs X times" randomly apply those kills so even if there are 20 "mobs" you might end with 4/20 when each run would give me like 8g). Not worth at all :/

Your suggestion is grindy one without one bit of fun. Yes i can also quote and make statements too

Cause killing 1 bam on "similar" level in 20 sec with overpowered avatar weapon facerolling on the keyboard is fun... I guess we have a different meaning of the word fun :P Also if you read, I've suggested that if OP wants fun (or at least a bit of a challenge and a way to somehow improve his skillz) he can solo those bams with random quest/drop weapon instead of the avatar one. At least he could learn boss attacks patterns with this.

All in all what OP will do - is up to him/her. But seeing that the question was "or i can just grind myself in dungeons?" - OP doesn't suggest he is interested in "lore or exploring", doesn't want to do pointless quests, waste time on LFG or waste time on soloing instances. And Zaras suggestion will make him do that.

tl;dr - BHS should just disable leveling, no tears would be shed after it, and if they made getting achievements worth it, that would be a way better incentive to explore TERA world then doing yellow quests.

Edited once, last by nagios ().

  • You are correct it was wrong of me to think you quoted because you wanted to say he is wrong and i apologize for that  . Somehow i got this feeling that everytime someone quotes and makes his own statement = not agreeing with quoted text means one quoting wants to imply how that quote is wrong...dunno if you can understand what i wrote because its kinda cloudy for me too :pillepalle:

Anyway i leveled like 23 chars so far (only 16 i mean  :ninja: ) and yeah from my 3rd char everything was just rushing bams hitting 65 asap :D. And yes!! i forgot to write down in my last post that since OP did not ask for "fun" leveling i understand and respect your informative comment

the "nagios i don't know why you even bothered to comment..." was for zaras "If this is your first character (I assume it is) , you may want to experience all the outer world Tera has to offer. " since he pointed out that could be done didn't said it must be done so i was a bit triggered by multiple "No. No. And NO. Do NOT"

It is nice to see people commenting on noobies posts though i dont think he came back to check it

  • If he replies or not, I'd like to thank as completely new player.
I created my account yesterday, chose Elin as ninja and I am lv21.

So far I'm fascinated by combat style, so I don't mind doing main story quests.

Is there any helpful equipment or weapons that I may miss if I just chose to grind on my own?
(Not that I'm going to. I wan't to explore the world and gain exp at the same time.)

I think that's only possible if you're trying to level via BGs (which is fine and such, but you probably won't find some weapons then and have troubles later if you skip one of those). It doesn't matter that much though, sa you will find a lot of stuff as well that makes up for the lack of a weapon.

    Ultima | Lv70 Priest | ILv 498 | Yurian | Main
    Aeq | Lv70 Archer | ILv 466 | Yurian | Ex-Main
    Quest | Lv70 Zerk | ILv 470
    | Yurian | what a joke

    Game Over.

Always play with avatar weapon because they have "hidden" stat which is double crit for pve monsters which is hugeeee in tera. You get it by killing w/e you can as you already saw since avatar is gained on lvl 12 nowadays. Enchant that to +9 and easy. You dont need to bother with +9 other equipment though its kinda useless.
