Tera FPS Guide

  • Hi all,

    I had some issues with FPS lag in my game, tbh I have quite a decent setup, and I could not understand why so I Googled for answers everywhere. I spent hours trying different options and settings until I had found exactly what helped me the most and thought I would share it with all of you. :beer:

    This guide isn’t there to show you how to change the basics like shadows, draw distance, etc… Those you can play with for yourself to get the best possible results with visual imaging to suit your eye. The only change you need to make in game for this guide is set the Lighting Enrichment to 1

    This guide is a brief one on some “behind the scenes” changes you can make to improve responsiveness of the game in general in addition to the visual changes mentioned above.

    If you are looking for a guide on changes for visuals in game there are many on the forums and on the net that explain each and every setting (although they are pretty self explanatory tbh).

    So where we start is with a few necessary changes to the S1Engine.ini file:

    Note: If you want to know what any of these changes do please go take a look at this site (just so you don’t change anything that will give you undesirable results) - LINK

    Firstly you will need to look for “bSmoothFrameRate=true” here there are 2 major changes you can make (this generally helps for people who have higher end CPUs).

    1. Change “bSmoothFrameRate=true” to “bSmoothFrameRate=false” (This is what I currently use)
    2. Leave “bSmoothFrameRate=true” and increase the min/max values below to a desirable setting (30MIN/130MAX is a good place to start)

    Make the following changes to other values

    DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=True > DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=False

    DynamicShadows=True > DynamicShadows=False

    LightEnvironmentShadows=True > LightEnvironmentShadows=False

    MotionBlur=True > MotionBlur=False

    DepthOfField=True > DepthOfField=False

    Bloom=True > Bloom=False

    UseHighQualityBloom=True > UseHighQualityBloom=False

    bAllowBetterModulatedShadows=True > bAllowBetterModulatedShadows=False

    bEnableForegroundSelfShadowing=True > bEnableForegroundSelfShadowing=False

    MaxShadowResolution=2048 > MaxShadowResolution=512

    Once you have made these changes to your config file we will need to open your graphics card driver window and set app specific settings for Tera.exe:

    1. Under the anti-aliasing option set this to override application settings and set the level to either x2 or x4
    2. Look for quality settings and set this to performance

    We are almost done now, for users with multicore processors (which I assume everyone is if you play this CPU intensive game) you will need to do the following:

    1. Download this app: LINK
    2. Click check status
    3. If you see any cores labelled “parked” click the “unpark all cores” option

    Once you have done the above go back to your S1Engine.ini file and search for the line “CompatLevelGPU”, once you have found this add the following line directly below “CPUNumLogicalProcessors=X” (Where “X” is the number of logical processors windows detects for your CPU, the amount of logical processors can be checked in the performance tab in your task manager where you will see the amount of processors windows detects there)

    And there we go you should be getting quite a decent FPS jump with those changes. :thumbsup:

  • Try just upgrading your graphics drivers. I had a huge boost in performance since I last upgraded my driver (nvidia).

  • number473 Haha yeah thats true. I think I just assume everyone is using the latest drivers for their components, I check daily for new drivers for mine :P

  • Sadly it says every 28 days now. Look at the very bottom here:

  • Telling the game how many cores you have didn't do anything for me.

    Unparking the cores seems to help a little bit though.

    Disabling core parking gave me a really decent fps boost. Remember that the game mainly uses the CPU and the more of the CPU it can use makes it run a hell of a lot better

  • Don't know if it was mentioned here before, but after I upgraded my Nvidia drivers to 320-something (the latest ones for my laptop), I got a significant performance boost.

    It must be the same driver upgrade I did since I'm also on a laptop. Really big boost which must have fixed some sort of issued the game had communicating with the hardware or something technical like that.

  • Is it normal for me to lose my loading screens (the background images) as well as launcher news feed and all, as a result of making those changes?

  • I've tested more of these things before, and i can tell it helps.
    If your PC is too old and weak, nothing will help you tho.
    TERA is hungry for resourses game.
    I play Bioshock Infinite (also Unreal3 game) pretty much maxed, but i have to make tweaks on the .ini files in TERA to improve my framerate.

    My point is, that these guides REALLY helps, but can't make miracles for weaker machines.

  • You need high end motherboard and CPU to play comfortably. Other stuff can be 5 years old mainstream equipment and it'll still run like a boss.

  • Helped me alot i have Intel E3200 2.4ghz, 2GB DD3 and Amd HD2600 XT and i can run the game now on medium settings. Tnx a lot

  • You can also push you videocard to use an higher framerate by changing:

    [Engine.Client]
    MinDesiredFrameRate=40.000000

    Only negative effect is, that your videocard is using more power. If your videocard cant push for example to 40 fps, it will drop and try to get the highest framerate possible.

    Other thing you can do is changing the memory clock or core clock of your videocard by using MSI Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector.
