If you talk about games today, you’ll often hear about achievements. It doesn’t matter if you play on PC, your favorite gaming console or your smartphone. Achievements are everywhere and many people out there really love them. Most of the time they are just increasing virtual trophies, awarding players with a certain amount of special points or other minor rewards. Still many players do the weirdest stuff in a game, just to unlock a certain achievement.

Achievements are not a big deal, but they still change the way we play games today. Achievement hunting has become something like the chase for special items in RPGs.

We’ll have achievements in TERA as well. If you die for the first time, you’ll unlock an achievement. You got invited to a party? Achievement unlocked! But, you just won’t unlock achievements like these, you’ll also get them for reaching certain target goals in TERA. As an example, you could receive a special achievement, if you reach a certain level or kill a certain rare mob as the first player on your server.

Some players also like to post their recent achievements to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

We know want to know your opinion on achievements.

The last voting showed us, that you would prefer an increased quest type diversity for the western version of TERA.

From now the VOTC will be published bi-weekly, so you have more time to give us your feedback on the actual topic!

  • I played wow for quite some time.
And I LOVED to do achievements! It will often reflect skill, patience and cooperation to get some of those achievements.
I voted for "special titles"... But i'd also like visual items, like clothing or maybe a mount. (depends of the achievement difficulty series ofcourse) So you can actually "show off" that you got that (very hard to get ^^) achievement.

  • Gah so few people voted, I only wnat minor rewards, not game breaking achievemnts are there for the fun of it and to spice encounters or other things up a bit. Giving them a mount or something like that that looks awesome or some fun cosmetic stuff is all good! But i dont want stats awards, that just fucks up the whole achievement in my opinion. If you get an achievement for a boss then you get the reward in the kill itself and some items, no need to get double up there...

And i also vote for the special character titles aswell, atleast for the hard earned achievements =) so two votes for me but if i had to choose give us some special cosmetic rewards!

  • Voting for cosmetic items but Id like titles as rewards, too. As above posters I do like the idea of mounts earned through achievements.
As long as the items isn't too important (being something you must have to be able to play with the cool guys) Im happy.

  • I'm not a fan of the stupid achievements in games such as WoW - the whole "you've reached max level" or anything of a similar level of stupidity and ease. Ideally I'd only want hard achievements that are really earnt but I'm guessing this wont be the case so here my opinion:

    - Easy or luck (like getting a mount on a 0.0001% drop rate) Achievements = No special reward if anything at all (nothing to effect game play or visuals...maybe just some achievement points)
    - Hard Achievements = Cosmetic rewards (pretty stuff that doesn't affect game play such as fancy mounts, bunny/racoon ears, titles, a fancy glow around you, ability to use special colours such as gold glow dye to modify armour/weapons, names in towns etc)

Why? Rewards should be for those who earn them - not something anyone can get! Why only cosmetic? If you're one of the top players you will be getting the top gear already weather it be from PVP or PVE content - why give the best something that makes them even better? They don't need it! Achievements should be all about the bragging rights - when you run through a city the top players should stand out and that's done with cosmetics. WoW players think back to Vanilla WoW when there were very few titles (i.e. Scarab Lord) - not like today when every moron runs around in top tier gear and random titles. L2 players think about the glow around Heroes and the fact they have there name on the monument (not the weapons/armour) - I hope this is still right, been years since I played L2!

  • Title, i vote this because is more easy to implement. Fluff is never a bad idea but i prefer devs focus more on important matters like balance and more end-game content.

  • I voted for 'cosmetic items' however, I, like Billy, would like to see unique titles awarded as well as cosmetics (on a tangent, so their will be an outfit system added?! xD)

I think it would be awesome to have sort of 'rare' cosmetics, like by rare I mean hard to get (challenges). Different kinds of challenges and levels of difficulty, as Lunainin mentioned would be nice to see as well - ones that require team play to achieve, ones that you need to explore certain regions to achieve etc etc.

In Lord of the Rings Online they implement a 'deed' system. Basically you get unique titles for completing a deed (explore the areas in this region/kill 'X' of this mob) and they also reward cosmetic mounts if you complete a specific set of deeds.

Achievements definitely give a player more to do at end game, especially if they are a completion freak. I was happy to see the system implemented in RIFT when I tried out the BETA, I think it would be a sweet addition to TERA too.

I don't think a option to publish 'earned achievements' on social networking sites is required though... and of course the achievements should most definitely not reward players with stats/items and such that tip the balance of the game.

  • I am honestly not sure about this one, both rewards with buffs or cosmetic rewards are attractive.
The problem with buff rewards is that there will always be people who abuse the system to get the reward in an unfair way. Say "Kill a total of 100 players within a day", just get an allied guild to fight your guild for a day so everyone in both guilds farms the achievement and gets the item/buff. I guess for the whole safety I would opt for cosmetic rewards. However, if there was a way to get buff rewards that are actually an achievement to get and cannot be easily farmed, then it would be nice to see those as well.

    Kind regards,

  • I voted for tittle it's nice to walk around on the game with something cool next to your name :)

  • I voted for Cosmetic Only!
Even if people are, you know, gathering to just do achievements and that stuff, their reward will just be something cosmetical.
Achievements are nice, especially in this kind of games, so a reward is nice imo. At least for the harder achievements!
Extra stats and buffs for achievement items is a bad idea, then a lot of people will focus on just doing the achievements. :/
    That's my opinion!

  • Cosmetic stuff, including mounts ! ;)
For example... You completed the instance and you killed tha last boss which was a golem under 5mins and nobody in your group were higher than 2 lvls from the boss? You get an achievement and a mount made from rock so it'll remind the boss.

There also seems to be a tabard slot in the character profile, not sure if it is but it could be. We could also get tabards from achievements

    Well, everything is relative ;o
I dont see anything bad in having some "easy" achievements such as reaching high level, getting your first mount or completeing your first instance. These are still stuff that makes you go "I did it!" even if it in the long run doesnt matter that much or that you felt that it was a easy achievement to earn.
I can't speak for everyone but In most games, reaching the max level is something of a achievement. It's much cooler to say that you got a max level char than "level 30 something" and when you finally get the last "ding!" it's the real "Ding!" that you perhaps have been waiting for.

I agree on the luck-thing. It's so frustrating to know that the achievement you're working on is soloey based on RNG/luck and not you as a player. That you cannot do anything special to make it happen more than keep trying/grinding/waiting.

If there are going to be achievement that earns you titles Id love to see some really odd and silly achievements for silly titles.
Such as "use 100 charms" and get the Charming title or "use the emote /silly 50 times" and get the title Joker.

  • Personally i dont care much for achievements, but i think they are a great extra content for certain people, and as said before some people really get zealous about getting them all.

I Also think that rewards could be intresting if done properly, for example the reward must be something linked to the achievement and not something that generally improves the character.

Why? Because in some instances they would become a tedious grind that is necessary, rather than some fun pastime that you get slightly rewarded for. For example i wouldnt want to go and slay 500 raidbosses so i could get something i have use of in pvp, thats plainly wrong and there are already the geargrind to consider, however if for example Boss A + Boss B gives an achievement that increases my pve damage/armor etc, likewise random pvp achievement giving a slight pvp boost, would be beneficial in all the right way.

Also naturally titles or other cosmetics is usually something people hunt for which is fine by me.

Maybe Guild achievements that can add some stats to the clan, cosmetics to the clanhall?

    The possibilities are endless.

+1 - I like the idea of this as it promotes team play and gives the guild something to work for as a group and not just individuals. Nice idea Lappy.

Well I don't really care if easy achievements are in the game, I just won't bother trying to get them - what I don't want is any sort of "reward" for doing them...I played WoW back in Vanilla through to WOLTK and my biggest peeve was that it went from a time you could instantly recognise the top players with stand out weapons/armour (epics were actually rare) and titles...now if you don't have full epics and half a dozen titles within a day of reaching max level you've clearly done something wrong. It's become so hard to tell the good players from the crap ones - the only real indication is the guild people belong to.

Simply put: I don't want the game flooded with achievements and cosmetics, I want them reserved for top players who earn them. The hardest part is fitting in these sort of achievements without forcing everyone to be in a guild - some need to be solo.

I like the idea in terms of cosmetics for the clanhall.

  • The word "achievement" allready tells you what it should be. Achieving something should reward you with something worth it, so I voted for items or buffs.

  • Titles or cosmetics or something that wont give you any advantages.
The idea of guild achievements is pretty good, but again with only decorative rewards.
Anyway.. if the achievements give you somekind of reward they should be hard.

  • Cosmetic rewards.
WoW did a great job with their achievement system. Their system is great and i'd pretty much like to see something similar on tera. Only hard achievements give you stuff like special mounts or titles but no achievement should give you buffs or pvp/pve items.

  • If I have to choose one of them, I’d say cosmetic rewards.

But I think it’s a must to have all of them. We must have easy-for-everyone- achievements, only-for-hardcore achievements and I-am-lucky-as-hell achievements. Every one of us should be able to get at least a few easy achievements, but achievements are that, achievements, so the harder the better.

About the rewards, I personally have special preference on cosmetics, it’s always nice to see people having achievement-only cosmetics and think “Wow, I want it too”, but the same occurs with titles. Items and buffs you say? Depending on what we are talking about. Reward items must not have stats, same occurs with buffs. But it when you mean buff you are talking about an item ‘buffing’ your character with a *insert color here* glow during *insert time here*, then nice (By the way, it could be great to have! I remember we have a thread about glows at the fansite). But if you mean having X strength during X time, then I don’t like it. About social network integration, I’m not a big fan but meh, lots of people like it.

Anyways, I hope we’ll have a TON of achievements, with different difficulties, solo achievements, party achievements, guild achievements, achievements, achievements, achievements and more achievements...

    PS: I love achievements.
