TESTED FPS Fix

is it okay Tera uses only 1.3 gb ram?

If you are running on 32 bit system, yes. It seems to be hard coded to lower texture resolution at around 1.3 gb threshold.

32 bit systems can only access up to 4 GB of RAM, even if you have more. Applications in 32 bit systems can only use up to 2 GB, the other 2 GB are reserved by the OS for drivers and what not. There is an option in the OS to change this to 3 GB for applications and 1 GB for the system, but it seems to not have impact on TERA because it's hardcoded to lower textures at around 1.3 GB if you're using 32 bit system.

Quite annoying because I'd want it to use 1.8 GB before it lowers textures, or even more than 2 GB if I turn that option on... but it's too stubborn >.>

  • If you mean it uses only 1.3 GB on win 8 64-bit, then that's weird :s

I have 32 bit myself but people who have 64 bit (or upgraded to it because of texture problem) say it uses 2 GB+ after a while of playing.

  • Hmmm I'm having an issue.
When I change it to "Window Mode full screen", instead of adjusting to my screen, it takes a lower resolution.
    Anyone knows why this happens?

    EDIT:
Forgot to say I found it.
In S1Engine.ini, look for ResX and ResY, and change those to your screen resolution.

  • This is not 100% correct, you can use more than 4GB ram on 32 bit systems, you just need a little patch to apply to windows.

And BTW this tutorial is nonsense, all it does is to set everything to low or turn stuff off like shadows. Ppls who doesnt have a great PC will naturally see a FPS increase, thats not magic.

I can turn off and on what I want and still get the same FPS, in the wild mostly 60 FPS (vsync) and in questhubs, little villages around 37-54 or so and in the main city at the broker at prime time its around 22-25. Thats with everything maxed out of course.

It really depends on how many ppls are in your area, even if you dont directly see them like in the maincity (if you logon early when nearly nobody is on for example you will see the difference)

    Intel 3570k
    670 GTX
    8GB DDR3 Ram
    Windows 64bit
    1920x1200

Look at RIFT for example, its an older game now and while the graphics are ok they aren that great but still gettin crappy FPS there in cities and even in the wild at some places. Now with crappy fps I mean around I dont remember correctly but I think it was sometimes around 37 or something. Now look at my rig and think about RIFT /cough ... even ppls with better systems having problems in RIFT.

Its just a crappy engine and probably bad optimized, same applies probably to Tera. But I have to say Tera runs better than RIFT at least when there arent too many ppls around.

I can run games like BF3 on 64 player servers on max settings without any problems.

No you can't, my computer is old and I have Windows 32 bit. My motherboard alone doesn't see more than 3.25 GB even though I have 4 (the rest is reserved for system)

It is impossible to read more than 4 GB with 32 bit. 32 bit means you only have 4 bytes (32 bits) to access the memory with. These can only hold up to 4 billion-something values, which is exactly 4 GB.

Unless you mean reading from page file, but that is not RAM, it's on a hard drive, and thus slow as hell.

  • That is wrong. Each process has its own addressing space. So each can have up to 4 GB, which is why certain operating systems (especially older 32-bit Server OS systems) had Page Address Extension up to 128 GB of RAM.

The addressing is indeed 4 bytes each, but it is far more complicated than you think it is. This is not DOS era anymore. "Paging", or the paging file as you said, is an inherent function of modern CPUs (in fact, all 32-bit CPUs), each 4 KB block in memory has an associated page. This is both for security and for extendability. The famous "memory access violation" is only detected because of paging. The page file is just something Microsoft designed based around the entire paging memory system.

Basically, each process has its own virtual addressing space. They cannot interfere with another addressing space unless they share, which has security settings of course, and in case of bugs, it is caught as exception.

And btw the reason you see only 3.25GB is not because of motherboard most likely (unless it's a crappy one), but because of how Windows XP works. Most likely, your video card has around 512-1GB of VRAM, and Windows reserves addressing space for it

No, it is the motherboard, even written in the manual it has. It's 5 years old though :p or more

  • Ever tried to switch on LAA? With that you can allocate more memory for applications even on 32bit systems like XP, provided the /MAXMEM switch in your msconfig will be set for more than 2GB's (in other words, you need more than 2GB's of memory onboard, physically).

A lot of issues TERA causes of 32bit systems is mainly because it can't allocate enough memory for itself, and it uses a lot (actually a lot more, than the system tells). When you have it capped at 3.25GB, from which ~1GB is being reserved for the system, you're left with not much left; it's not even enough for TERA to work properly, hence the (in)famous 32bit texture issue that happens in overtime.

  • Im currently have a low FPS (about 15) :pinch:
    and doing this guide tutorial.
and i miss at this section "Open nVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings > Use High performance nVIDIA processor > Apply" (which mentioned on notepad)

i couldn't find that setting in my NVIDIA Control Panel.
    Here is my screenshoot :

i have completed other settings, and only this one i could not figure it out. ;(
    Please Help.
